Gobo Wheel, 2009

Installation view of the exhibition Gobo Wheel at Tom Barry’s Bar, in association with the Cork Artists Collective, 2009, series of sixteen photographic transparencies shown as a lightbox display. Transparency dimensions 30 x 21cm.

The photographs show one rotation of a gobo wheel in close detail. A gobo wheel is a template used within the interior mechanics of disco lighting systems to create changing patterns of light and shadow, popular in nightclubs and bars as a way of stimulating atmosphere. Addressing the rotation of designs that appear on the Gobo Wheel template, the photographs expose mechanisms by which social space can be constructed.
