Gobo Wheel, 2009

Series of sixteen photographic transparencies, 30 x 21cm

The photographs show one rotation of a gobo wheel in close detail. A gobo wheel is a template used within the interior mechanics of disco lighting systems to create changing patterns of light and shadow, popular in nightclubs and bars as a way of stimulating atmosphere. Addressing the rotation of designs that appear on the Gobo Wheel template, the photographs expose the mechanisms by which social space is constructed. The transparencies were shown as a lightbox display in Tom Barry’s Bar, in association with the Cork Artists Collective.
